We bought Surrey Fire with Hughie Morrison from Tattersalls Book 1. Matt Coleman and Anthony Stroud called him a ‘grand horse’ who looks like he will be progressive middle distance colt, certainly best placed for Hughie’s patient approach which has worked so well with Surrey Racing’s horses so far.
Tattersalls Book 1 was a three-day bonanza of record returns that had even seasoned sales-goers walking around Park Paddocks shaking their heads in disbelief. Europe's premier yearling sale certainly lived up to its reputation in spectacular fashion. Horses bought at Book 1 are eligible for the Book 1 Bonus, a £20k bonus for winning a Class 2, 3 or 4 two year old Maiden or Novice race in Britain run up until November next year.
The sire Masar, who is from the same family as Sea The Stars and Galileo, won the Group 3 Solario Stakes as a two year old, before improving on that by winning the 2018 Epsom Derby. The mare, Sweet Selection, trained by Hughie, won the 2016 Cesarewitch before winning the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes the following year. Surrey Fire had a very impressive debut at Nottingham, running green but finishing second in a valuable novice. He clearly needed the race on his return as a 3 year old at Kempton but then stormed home at Lingfield. A couple of below par runs (poor draw at Lingfield and awful ground at York) has ended his season. He’ll be back bigger and stronger next February.
