Surrey Quest’s sire, Milan, was a classic winner, winning the St Leger in 2001, before heading to Belmont for the Breeders Cup Turf, just getting pipped by Fantastic Light. He is one of the leading NH sire’s and a particular favourite of Nicky’s, with his top offspring trained by Nicky being Santini, who came 2nd in this year’s Gold Cup. He also sired Monalee, who came 4th and other big race winners include Jezki, who won the Champion Hurdle, and Grand National winner One For Arthur.
Surrey Quest has grown into a real strong looking gelding which was evident when he made his bumper debut at Warwick finishing a very close 2nd to stablemate Russian Ruler who was simply more forward. After his summer break he began his novice hurdling campaign with a very impressive win at Leicester, and then followed that with an even more impressive win at Doncaster. However in the step up to Graded racing he ran poorly in the Ballymore Leamington at Warwick and needed to be looked after in the EBF Novices Final at Sandown, finishing 7th. After a break in Cornwall where we ascertained a year old issue, Quest has now joined Toby Lawes in Surrey and made his seasonal appearance with a stunning win over fences at Huntingdon, and followed that up at the end of the year with a superb, battling performance to win the iconic Mandarin Trophy at Newbury. The syndicate owners are living the dream!
He finished the year in the Scottish Grand National where he agonisingly got beaten by a nasal hair, but he’ll be back next season for bigger and better races with the Scottish and English Grand Nationals on the target list!
