Mist Denied in Paris

We had a very enjoyable weekend in Paris with the Surrey Mist owners. Surrey Mist performed creditably, it’s no mean feat to finish 4th in a Group 3 although we did think he would finish slightly higher. The general feeling was that the ground was very tacky and he didn’t really enjoy running in it, plus Kevin  thought that maybe he wasn’t as fit as he could have been. He’s come out of the race well though and should improve for the run. He has the entry in the race in Cologne next month, plus there are other options both here in the UK and in France.

Surrey Lord unfortunately won’t be going to Newbury next Saturday as Toby just feels he’s not quite ready to hit the racecourse yet. We know some of the owners are frustrated by the news but he’s a good horse that is just not mentally or physically mature yet so there’s no point risking a bad experience that could put him off racing. Toby will keep working him and hopefully the penny will drop before the season is over and we still get to see him run.

Surrey Belle, because of her size and immaturity had a few muscle spasms last year which was treated with a drug called acepromazine which is in common use. Hughie was hoping that she would be drug free this season but she’s had a bit of a flare up so she now needs a 2 week break and will back onto the drugs again. It does however mean that she now won’t making her reappearance in April. Hughie had her scoped as well because sometimes muscle cramps can be caused by stomach ulcers but the good news is she’s 100% sound.

Next up could well be Surrey Noir who has had some good training runs on the grass this week. Charlie did initially think Kempton for his debut but because of the good work he thinks it may be better to wait a few extra days and have his debut at Doncaster on Sunday 2nd over 7 furlongs.

Surrey Charm is moving well on the gallops and just starting to come out of her winter coat. There’s no reason not to expect her to run later in April. Surrey Fire continues to grow and appears very happy in himself. Hughie x-rayed all of his youngsters recently and was surprised to see that Fire’s knees are very mature and in excellent condition so it’s possible we may see him on the track earlier than we thought. Kevin echoes similar thoughts about Surrey Force who is one of his most forward 2 year olds. We know from experience that it very rarely goes to plan!

No real news on the others. Surrey Fortune and Surrey Knight are making slow progress and now Cheltenham has finished we will catch up with Nicky and find out how Surrey Quest is, he must be due to race again soon.

Have a great week ahead
