24th August Update

We were upset that Surrey Gold and Gran Luna are to be retired – two horses who have given us 8 wins from 20 runs and plenty of good memories. We will make sure they are looked after and live a happy life in retirement even if that does mean the owners have to pay a couple of extra months to ensure they have the right rehabilitation.

Surrey Gold is to stay at Hughie’s for about 4 weeks to receive further treatment before being moved to the care of Jackie du Plessis in Cornwall to complete his that process. Once the legs have stabilised we will find him a good home so we will ask the owners to pay for another couple of months to get Gold through that 6-7 month period. There are some sales coming up for Gran Luna but there is nothing to stop a buyer from racing her so we will wait for the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale which is held on the 13th to the 20th November. It does mean we won’t receive as much for her opposed to a normal Horse in Training sale, (she doesn’t have black type to really appeal to breeders) but we feel it’s important that she doesn’t run again risk  further damage and pain.

Some good and bad news for Surrey Noir who has been going well in training. We were contemplating a debut next weekend which would then have him ready for the Weatherbys Race at Doncaster on the 8th September but unfortunately yesterday he appeared slightly lame which rules out entries this coming weekend and regrettably it means that it really isn’t worth paying the additional £900 for the Weatherbys Stakes at the next confirmation stage on Wednesday. The good news is that the injury is to his foot and not any tendons and Charlie hopes he’ll be back ridden by the end of the week. If that’s the case then he will have an entry into a novice stakes at Ascot on Friday 2nd and then the Redcar 2 Year Old Trophy is very much still on the cards (October 1st). He’s showing up pretty nicely on the gallops, there’s obviously no guarantees that he does that on the track but early signs are good and we just want to be extra cautious right now.

Surrey Belle has another week at rest before coming back into training and Surrey Knight has settled in at Culworth Grounds Farm.

The NH horses are all doing well. Tom Cannon had a sit on Surrey Lord this week for a gentle canter and Lord behaved impeccably. Surrey Fortune and Surrey Quest are well - a reminder that Fortune’s share price will rise in 10 days time so if you are thinking of a NH share let us know this week!

Never a dull moment!
