4th August Update
Another week, another winner!
It was great to see Surrey Fire break his maiden on Tuesday (the second consecutive Tuesday we’d had a winner) at a very steamy Lingfield. We know Fire wasn’t fit on his first run back after a long break which wasn’t a wasted run, as we learnt a lot from that Kempton outing. This time back down in distance, on a left handed track that certainly helped, Harry Davies got Fire rolling along in front and that’s where he stayed. It wasn’t all perfect, Fire got agitated in the stalls, odd numbers get loaded first and he was in for longer than he wanted, (he will probably wear a hood in the stalls if he has an odd number draw) and he still ran green so we’re sure he will learn and come on for the run.
That was our 208 run, our 43rd winner, with 8 of those trained by Hughie (from 34 runs). It was our second winner at Lingfield (Surrey Mist the other) and it was Harry Davies first winner in the yellow and blue. If Fire gets a mark of 82 he’ll be our 6th best horse, which is currently held by Surrey Shadow on a mark of 81.
The handicapper will assess the run and give Fire a mark on Tuesday, and if that’s the case the plan could be to race at Pontefract on Sunday 18th if he’s ready to race again by then. However, he won’t be rushed, he’s still a big baby and Hughie will do what’s right for him. Congrats to all the syndicate owners !
Not too much news on the other horses. Surrey Belle was lowered only a pound following her run last week to a mark of 73. There aren’t too many options for her over the coming weeks, but after two quick runs over 2 miles she probably needs a small break. One possibility for her next race is on August 24th, a 1m 6f contest at Redcar, it’s a race that stands out where we hope she can win again.
Surrey Charm is a little behind schedule, we were hoping she would be back racing this month, she is well, but not being rushed so there is a chance her next race could slip into September but we’ll know more later in the month.
Surrey Shadow has a few more days until we can safely say he’s off the danger list and can start the next stage of his rehab.
There is no new news on the NH horses, they are all well.
By the time you read next Sunday’s edition we may have had three runners! Surrey Mist could make his comeback at Ascot on Saturday in the Shergar Cup Challenge, a class 2 handicap over 12 furlongs but the chances are unlikely without any rain forecast in the next 7 days forecast. Also on the same day, and again unlikely for the same reason, Surrey Force may be entered at Lingfield, and the next day at Leicester, with more entries throughout the following week (see below).
More than likely we will have a runner on Sunday in France. Surrey Noir is fine and came out of his last race really well, although he had a few easy days he’s now back on the Chantilly gallops. Tim regrets running him over a short distance but in fairness to Tim, he hasn’t had the horse long and it was a learning race. However it has made Tim’s mind up that he thinks Noir is going to be more effective over longer. So next Sunday he has an entry in a 1600m race at Aurillac (South of France) and a 1200m race at Nort-Sur-Edre (just North of Nantes). Both are afternoon fixtures, times to be confirmed.
Good luck to connections
