Coronation Update
This week’s highlight for us was a successful trip to the Tattersall’s Guineas Breeze Up sale where we were delighted to buy a great looking Territories colt got 65 000 gns who we have named Surrey Shadow and who has already joined Tom Clover. We’ll send more details in a separate email in the next day or so.
Over the past few years we have been unable to find the right horse at the Breeze Up sales because of exorbitant price rises. The Guineas Breeze Up Sale has produced no less than thirty Group/Listed performers since 2016 and this years sale saw record price increases (yet again) with the average 18% higher than last years record. However, we do like them as a source of good young horses and although Breeze Up horses tend to attract a premium, they do have the advantage of making their racecourse debut within a few months of purchase which certainly softens the frustrating wait for the first run. We have enjoyed great success with our previous Breeze Up purchases with Surrey Hope, Surrey Thunder and Surrey Pride all achieving official ratings of over 96 and Surrey Thunder remains our best rated horse at 106.
We have a quiet start to the week but then from Saturday it’s all go for 8 days! We are looking forward to Charlie’s owners visit next Saturday where we have over 20 owners coming along, which is great. Charlie had another Group winner yesterday, he’s had a super start to the season so I’m sure the team will be on good form next weekend. Surrey Noir is well and more likely to be heading to Doncaster on Saturday 20th with Salisbury the following week only there as a back up plan. Surrey Knight continues on the longer grass gallops which he is handling in his stride. The visit this coming weekend should coincide with a pick up in his work so we’ll be keen to hear more from Charlie. As we mentioned, we did have two 5% shares up for sale in both horses, Noir’s share has been sold, but Knight’s is still available, so if you may be interested then please do come along on Saturday and find out more about the horse?
Both Billy and Toby wish to draw a line in the sand and put Surrey Fortune and Surrey Lord out for a summer break in the next week or so. Both trainers are extremely happy with the horses, they are doing everything that’s being asked of them but the trainers don’t see any benefit from running them now and prefer to give them a rest to improve both mentally and physically. The plan for both will be to come back into a bumper late September/early October. Frustrating as it is, a few extra months at the start will pay dividends in their later years. Meanwhile our other NH horse, Surrey Quest is now in Cornwall and enjoying the sea air!
Surrey Charm has been pretty poorly the past few weeks but thankfully she has responded to a strong dose of antibiotics but it does mean she’ll be on the easy list for the next few weeks. Hopefully by the time we go and see her, Hughie will have a better idea of where she’s at. Surrey Belle on the other hand is in good shape and will have a fast piece of work this week and if that goes to plan then an entry to Salisbury will be made on Friday (for the 18th). Surrey Fire is very well and we’re looking forward to seeing how much he has progressed on Saturday week.
Those going to Kevin’s bbq on Sunday will get more info on the two horses there but he’s very pleased with both of them. The plan for Surrey Mist is to race at York at the Dante meeting next week, in a class two handicap on Wednesday 17th – the first race on the card. Surrey Force continues to be pushed along and is still ahead of where we thought he would be at this time of the year.
Have a good week and we’ll see those coming along to Newmarket next Saturday and Sunday.
