End of May Update
A busy 7 days to come with potentially 3 horses running this week which is pretty exciting!
Last week we had the Annual Surrey Racing Golf Day with the best ever turnout of 24 players (syndicate owners and trainers) braving the damp conditions. The wet weather made the course a tough challenge, a few choice words being heard around the greens! The top 3 all finished on the same points so it went to a back 9 countback which put Richard P in 3rd, but then two were still equal, so a final 6 hole count was needed to separate winner Tom Clover to 2nd James M – very unlucky on James as he was giving Tom 30 shots! We are already looking forward to the 2025 event!
Surrey Noir will be running tomorrow at Yarmouth in the lucky last, the 16.50, a class 5 handicap over 7 furlongs. Noir has been drawn stall 2 of the 14 runner race with Kieran Shoemark on board. Should the ground dry out Noir does have other options later in the week at Kempton and Doncaster, but Charlie thinks this is the right race for him to get back on track. He’ll hopefully settle better and come with a storming late finish!
Surrey Shadow should return to action on Saturday at Doncaster, in a class 2 Novice over 7 furlongs, currently scheduled for 5.40 pm, in a race with a prize fund of £40k. He’s in great shape and the forecast showers will hopefully produce ground that will be perfect for him so fingers crossed he backs up his impressive debut. Surrey Belle could be running at the same meeting, the opening race at 4.38, a 1m 6f class 5 handicap but it’s probably more likely that she will run the next day at Nottingham, in the 3.55, (part of the Sunday series, live on ITV 4) over the same distance. She’ll have entries to both and Hughie will make a call.
All 3 horses are in good shape and ready to race competitively so hopefully we’ll have something to celebrate about in next week’s update. Good luck to all connections.
The syndicate owners of Surrey Charm were given a boost today when half brother Stromberg earned black type with a gutsy run to finish 2nd at the Curragh in a Group 3. How much that will increase Charm’s value is hard to tell but hopefully Stromberg can step up further to win bigger races this season.
Of the rest of the horses there isn’t a lot to update on. They are as they were although it was great to see a video of Surrey Mist back on the gallops this week after nearly a year off.
We didn’t manage to buy a French bred 2 year old at the Tattersalls Ireland sale on Friday so on to the next breeze up which is at Deauville again on July 2nd, 40 of the 134 lots have French premiums so there should be plenty of options.
