February 19th update

It was good to catch up with some of the owners in Northamptonshire this week when we went to see Surrey Fortune and Surrey Knight. Both horses looked great and have certainly changed since we last saw them.

Surrey Fortune supposedly had a cough so wasn’t doing too much, but you wouldn’t know as he was in a very playful mood and obviously loves hacking about with the other horses. He’s grown a fair bit and continues to move in the right direction, a few months ago you couldn’t see him having the build for fences, that’s not the case now. We expect to see him on the track in a bumper late May.

Surrey Knight has started lunge work and you can tell that he’s starting to tighten up in all the right places. This coming week he will be ridden again as he’s slowly brought on for an eventual move around Easter back to Charlie’s and into full training. He will have a scan in a few weeks time as well so check that he’s ready for that extra workload.

This week we are looking forward to a visit to Newmarket to see the three horses we have in training there, meeting at Kevin’s Machell House yard at 08.45. All the horses are well but will update fully on Surrey Mist and Surrey Force after the visit.

Surrey Noir had another good piece of work on the Al Bahathri yesterday. He’s currently working alone as Charlie doesn’t want him to get too competitive just yet, but this coming week he’ll work with another horse as we get closer to his long awaited debut.

Surrey Lord is another who is impressing on the gallops, he worked at Epsom on Friday with Duhallow Tommy, who won a bumper at Fontwell a few weeks ago. There’s no doubt, barring injury/illness that he’ll be ready for the Newbury bumper at the end of March and although he’s built for fences he should be competitive judging by his training efforts, with the added bonus that he has only thrown Gareth off once in the past 3 weeks!

Hughie has been away for 2 weeks so no update from the horses there, and we’ll keep an eye out for potential Surrey Quest entries at the end of the week.

See those who are coming at Newmarket bright and early on Tuesday.
