Happy New Year

Happy New Year and Happy Birthday to all of our horses!

Amazing to think we spent most of the year praying for rain and then ended it yesterday in quite atrocious weather!

We finished the year with Surrey Quest’s run at Newbury yesterday. Unfortunately it wasn’t a winning one but in very difficult conditions he finished a credible 4th. Nicky pulled a few runners out but James Bowen thought Quest would be ok to handle the conditions so we gave it a crack. James said it took Quest ½ a mile to warm up, then he was going pretty well until the home straight when he started making a noise, and, as the front runners quickened he couldn’t go with them but despite making a mistake at the third last he ran on gamely. We know Quest has a minor wind issue, that’s why he wears a tongue tie, but in the conditions that issue is exaggerated, Quest could get away with it on good to soft or firmer but despite the official going for our race being soft it was hard work for the horses and jockeys. James thought further would suit Quest, who he thought would stay even 4 miles.

This week we have a few owners joining us to see Surrey Lord on the Box Hill gallops. We haven’t had the details yet from Toby so look out for an email in the next day or so confirming.

Our next runner, if all going well, will be Surrey Belle’s debut at Kempton on the 11th. She has had a quiet week as she’s had an infection on her foot but that was on the mend so hopefully she’ll be entered on Thursday.

Surrey Noir will now return to the main Warren Hill gallops this week. Warren Hill is a 4.5 furlong artificial gallops that rises 40 metres in the last two furlongs. It’s the busiest in Newmarket taking 16 000 horses per month. Charlie is really happy with his progress and if he continues doing well then he’ll make his debut in February.

Surrey Force and Surrey Fire are cantering daily. Surrey Force works over a steady 6f twice a day already and Kevin is really happy how he’s going. Surrey Mist is back steady cantering as he was only hacking before Christmas. He hasn’t really changed much, still looks leggy but he has bulked up a little.

No new news on Surrey Fortune, Surrey Charm or Surrey Knight but they are all well.

Plenty to look forward to this year with 6 horses yet to make their debut, two having only 4 runs between them and Group Racing on the agenda for Surrey Mist.

May all your dreams come true in 2023 !
