March 5th Update

A quieter week ahead for us after a couple of outings the past week. Wednesday some of the owners went to the Epsom gallops to watch Surrey Lord put through his paces. The gallops there are pretty nice with good views across the course but with only 130 horses in training now in Epsom, Surrey Lord and Kannapolis had the galops to themselves. Unfortunately for those of us present, Lord was disappointing and not his usual self at all. He was checked by the vet the next day and everything was fine but he didn’t eat up and for a horse who loves his food that is unusual so the vert will check him again tomorrow to see if anything has come to light.

Thursday evening we had our first ever Surrey Social, and very enjoyable that was, with 30 owners coming along for a few drinks and nibbles. It was a good opportunity for everyone to meet up and there was certainly some Cheltenham cajoling going on!

In other news, Surrey Quest had his hurdling official rating dropped by 4 pounds to match his chase rating of 122, and sticking with the NH horses, Surrey Fortune is now cough free and back to full work, his usual fresh self, bucking and enjoying himself!

The flat horses are all well. Surrey Knight has just completed his second week of trotting, he’ll have another 2 weeks of trotting before 4 weeks of cantering. He will have a scan around Easter time and then all being well he’ll go back into full training in Newmarket.

Surrey Charm is moving nicely and Hughie is aiming for her to reappear towards the end of next month. Two reasons for that, she needs a bit more time but also every trainer wants to get their flat horses out on the turf early April and the races are super competitive so it will suit Charm to let those first few weeks pass by. Surrey Belle is back into training after a short break as she slowly builds up for a reappearance in April.

Surrey Fire and Force are continuing the same pattern, hacks up the gallop, no pressure on them.

Surrey Noir is working hard, he’s been doing a sharp 4 furlongs gallop on Wednesdays followed by a 6 furlong gallop, with a partner, on Saturdays. Yesterday on the on the gallop he had Callum Shepherd on board. He is taking both gallops well within his stride and his fitness is rapidly improving, He’ll have a couple more quick pieces of work this week and then Charlie will now start looking at race planning – not long now!

Surrey Mist has been entered in the Group 3 Prix Exbury in Paris on the 18th, along with 9 others at this stage including Skalleti and Roger Varian’s Royal Champion. There is another entry stage on the 10th and a supplement stage on the 15th so there’s possibly more entries to come. For a Group 3 it looks a fairly open race – so we will continue to do the rain dance!

The entries can be seen here https://www.france-galop.com/en/racing/detail/2023/P/UGFjTVVPalZleEExTHF5bDlRRW1uUT09

The entries into the Group 2 Carl Jaspers Preis in Cologne race have closed, leaving 14 entered including the very classy Tunnes (won the German St Leger) and David Menuisier’s Belloccio .   https://www.deutscher-galopp.de/gr/renntage/rennen.php?id=1340968&d=20230423&s=N
