Mother’s Day Update

The syndicate owners had a good morning at Kempton on Friday where they saw Surrey Charm have her first racecourse gallop with Trevor Whelan riding – perfect weather as well – and it looked like Charm continues to do everything that is asked of her. She certainly wasn’t fazed from seeing everyone there and just seems a very compliant horse. She will have another gallop at Kempton in about 2 weeks time and depending on how that goes George may even start looking at possible debut races, over 6 to 7 furlongs.

We always find the debut’s to be the most exciting because you never really know what type of horse you have until that first run so yesterday that excitement was out in force!  The owners enjoyed a lovely sunny day, in front of a packed crowd at a very hospitable Doncaster to watch Surrey Knight make his debut against some very well bred horses in what looked to be a hot maiden.  What a great performance to come second and to be only beaten by a horse who was making his third start. There’s so much more to come over softer ground and the further the better – he looks a 1 mile 6 furlong horse for sure.

The runners come thick and fast – tomorrow Gran Luna faces only 2 others in the 4.05, a class 3 mares handicap hurdle over 2 miles 5 furlongs at Ludlow. She has had multiple entries in the past few weeks but we haven’t had too much communication from Nicky so we don’t really know what to expect but good luck to the owners – a great chance to pick up some fairly decent prize money.

Surrey Mist was given an opening mark of 83 by the handicapper this week which is probably fair despite us wanting a mark in the 70s !  There are some good options around for him but one that stands out is a 0-90 handicap at Sandown on April 22nd  over 10 furlongs. Surrey Princess has had an easy week after she stood on a stone and bruised her foot last week, so we will be looking for her to come back out on the turf in a couple of weeks time.

Surrey Noir is over his cough and working up Warren Hill again. Surrey Gold is really looking great, praying for rain in Edinburgh in 2 weeks time, and no news on Surrey Quest.

Some of you have asked recently about how much jockey’s get paid. Owners lose about 22% of their winnings, that money go to trainers, stable staff and jockeys but also jockeys get a per race fee. That has just been increased and is set out here.

Current / New

Flat

£127.90 / £142.90

Jump

£174.63 / £194.63

Finally - remember the trainers do welcome visits so please feel free to go along and see your horse in training, but we do ask that you arrange through us. We can try to co ordinate so Surrey Racing is not ringing or visiting on many different days as we like our trainers to concentrate on what they do best!

Good Luck to Gran Luna tomorrow !
