January 15th update
It was great to meet up with a new syndicate at Kempton this week for our first run of the new year, and the debut run for Surrey Belle. If trips to the bar are anything to go by this syndicate will have some fun when they get a winner!! Belle was on her toes in the parade ring, although settled going to the post but then ran keenly when the race started, not helped by the very slow pace. She was prominent coming into the straight but faded to finish 4th, with the King’s horse, Calmly, an impressive winner. Hughie was very pleased with the run, although she ran greener than he would have liked. He said she hasn’t really been pushed to race so it was no surprise that she got tired at the end. He likened the debut to that of Stay Alert who made her debut this time last year, and indicated that Surrey Belle may follow a similar path. He’ll wait a few more days but he’s likely to give her a short break. There’s no doubt she will improve for the run which will be in March/April – probably on turf, it will depend on the ground at the time.
Hughie added that Surrey Fire hasn’t been doing too much for the past few weeks and Surrey Charm is happy trotting away, which she will do for the next 3-4 weeks while she settles into her new yard. He did say she is moving well though having just had yet another growth spurt.
Next week will have more of an update on the three Newmarket horses (Surrey Noir, Surrey Mist and Surrey Force) and we will also arrange a date for an owners visit to them in the next few weeks.
We will be reaching out to the Surrey Fortune and Surrey Knight owners to see whether they wish to join us visiting both horses in Northamptonshire on Wednesday 15th February. We couldn’t find a convenient weekend but if you cant make this day then Billy and Sophie are very welcoming (as are all the trainers) so feel free to make your own visits (we do ask you arrange through us please).
Another potential idea, as we have a lot of new owners we thought we should hold a Surrey Social – a chance for those who wish to meet others, learn more about what to expect, maybe even get a Cheltenham tip or two so pencil in the evening of Wednesday 22nd February – possibly in Surbiton, which would be a decent central location as it has a good train service from all areas. Save the date and look out for details.
Finally – a few owners are heading to Ascot on Saturday – the Clarence House meeting - come and say hello if you see us in the King Edward VII stand.
