October 20th Update

We’re just back from a lovely visit to The Clover’s yard today where there was a parade of horses with a light lunch and drinks. It was great to see several Surrey Shadow owners there, who saw that Shadow was in a good mood and is now over his injury. He would have really benefitted from the enforced break and is now back trotting. His workload will very steadily increase through the rest of the year and we hope to see him back racing in a maiden at Kempton in February before a crack at the Silver Lincoln at Doncaster at the end of March. There’s plenty to happen before then!

The other highlight of the week was after several near misses we bought 2 well-bred yearlings to go racing with next year. The Surrey Shadow owners were lucky to get a first glimpse of Surrey Moon as he will be trained by Tom Clover and was part of the parade with the older horses. He showed great maturity and didn’t seem fazed by the occasion which is great to see. He’s impeccably bred by hot sire, French Derby winner, Study of Man, who is the only son of the hugely influential Japanese super sire Deep Impact standing in England. Surrey Moon is bred for middle distance, but he looks a racy type who is likely to run as a 2-year-old and is expected to start competing over 7 furlongs. We have already sold out of all the shares available in him.

The other purchase was Surrey King, a gorgeous son of Champion Miler Palace Pier who will go into training with Hughie. Palace Pier, rated the best son of the mighty Kingman, was an outstanding miler who won 5 Group 1s. Palace Pier beat Pinatubo in the G1 St James Palace and ran Baaeed to a neck conceding weight in the QE II on Champions Day. The dam, Highgarden, a granddaughter of the legendary Galileo, won a Group 3 over 12 furlongs and was rated 104. Surrey King is a strapping colt who will almost certainly start at 7 furlongs as a 2-year-old. However, he will get better with age and as he strengthens, is likely to develop into an extremely exciting middle-distance prospect. Hughie wishes to retain 25% but there are plenty of shares available, which may change once some of the other horses are sold!

We did have two entries this week but Surrey Force won’t be running at Nottingham as he is still not over his last run at Pontefract and the race has come a week too early for him. He’ll go straight to the sale the following Tuesday.

Surrey Charm will be having her last race for their owners at Newbury on Friday in a class 5 apprentice ‘hands and heels’ race over 2 miles scheduled for 1.41, the first race on the card.  It would be if she got get another win to boost her sales price. Her half brother Stromberg was very unlucky in a Listed Race in Ireland today, he surely would have won with a bit of racing room.

The following week we have a trip to Chantilly, 7 owners are crossing the Channel to visit the glorious gallops and racing in the shadow of the Château de Chantilly, see Surrey Etoile at Tim Donworth’s and watch Surrey Noir hopefully win some decent prize money in his first French handicap race of his new mark of 29 (kg). Feel free to join us.

Surrey Fire will be gelded tomorrow, then he’ll take some time out and be back firing all on all cylinders early next year while Surrey Belle has finished her season and will next be seen at Tattersalls on the 28th.

Good Luck to Surrey Charm and all her connections this week.
