Winning in Wolves Update
Wowsers – Surrey Gold - that was a very pleasant turn up at Wolves on Tuesday!
it’s hard not to get too carried away but that was the first winner at two that the dam has produced, and there can’t be too many Golden Horn winners at two, especially those that are bred to stay. Hughie was ecstatic – he said after the race that was the reason why he trains horses, it was unexpected to a certain extent, obviously it was a weaker race but it still had a well bred Godolphin horse and a 75 rated horse in the race so to win going away was fantastic. Rob Hornby (who I thought rode really well despite dropping his whip) commented on how Gold ran on for a fair distance after the race, a really good sign. Hughie commented that he hasn’t worked Gold for the last 3 weeks, he’s had one gallop that’s all.
We genuinely believe that Gold will be much better as a three year old, over further, and on the turf so to win over shorter, as a two year old, on the all weather gives us so many options, but before we get too carried away, he may not improve, that could be the best he is, but time will tell. So what now – I can’t fault the way he’s been looked after so far, so I trust Hughie to continue to work his magic. He doesn’t want to send Gold away, he wants him to have gentle work outs through the winter, keep him in fairly good shape but give him time to mature and grow stronger. Hughie I will treat him a bit differently now, he’s already moved into the lower ‘big boys’ stable !
In other horse news, Gran Luna is now being ridden again on the gallops although it will be a slow approach back to full fitness. Surrey Quest is doing more at Jane’s – he’s now been trotting for 4 weeks and started cantering for the first time this past week. Nicky has asked for her to continue to work him until the end of the year and he’ll return to Seven Barrows first week of January. Jane said he’s really strengthening well and looking very impressive. Hopefully come January we can revisit the stables and see them both at work.
Surrey Gold was our final run of 2020 – and we finish the year with a 21% win rate which is pretty impressive and one of the best syndicate performances of the year. Bring on 2021 !
