The end of January update!

A quiet last week although the syndicate owners were buoyed by the fact that Nicky Henderson feels Surrey Quest is good enough to be entered into the Ballymore at The Festival on Wednesday March 16th even though he’s a 66-1 chance! We haven’t spoken to Nicky and were actually surprised at the entry as last time we spoke he suggested that we wouldn’t ask too much from Quest this season as he recovers from his muscle pull. He has had very extensive chiro work and is now back to being ridden out. We’ll touch base with Nicky before the next confirmation stage which is February 15th.

A busy week ahead after Surrey Mist was entered into a median auction maiden over 10 furlongs at Lingfield on Friday – the 3.50 race. It’s only his second ever race, his debut being last July at Sandown. He has grown so much since then, as well as being gelded, and he looks in really good shape so I’m sure everyone is excited to see what kind of horse we have on our hands. We’ve never won at Lingfield, just maybe, we may change that! Trevor Whelan is booked to ride in what is likely to be a small field with only 8 entered, including 3 debutants.

The racehorse owners could be celebrating with other syndicate owners on Saturday at George’s stable visit on Saturday where we have at least 21 owners coming to see Mist, Surrey Princess and Surrey Charm in their home surroundings. We look forward to seeing you there and if you haven’t yet, please let us know if you are joining us at Robins Farm – 9.00 meet time.

We did think about selling Surrey Princess but the owners wish to keep her in training in the hope that she’s turned a corner. Certainly her last run was an improvement and considering she’s only had 6 runs then hopefully she can stay well and win races. I know Trevor and others said that Princess would be better on a galloping track – the fact is there aren’t any races scheduled that would suit her so we will be entering her at Chelmsford on the 11th, which is for Amateur jockeys and at Lingfield on the 18th, a 0-55 rated only, which bearing in mind the only two in front of her last race were rated 58 and 60 (the race was open to 0-60 rated) so we feel despite the track not suiting she should still be good enough to win.

Surrey Knight has now joined Charlie’s first lot on the gallops at Newmarket and will be worked up to race fitness. Surrey Gold is building up his fitness by working on a water treadmill at the stud where he is working for 20 minutes a time, 4 times a week, plus 3 lots of ‘lunging’. Gold and Surrey Belle will join Hughie’s in the third week of February and we have confirmed March 5th as the owners stable visit.

No news on Surrey Charm (who the owners will see next week) Surrey Noir or Gran Luna, whose latest Newbury form was well and truly franked by Miss Heritage winning a Grade 2 yesterday at Doncaster.

Good luck to the Surrey Mist owners – I think we will see a pretty good run from him Friday and start February with a bang!
