A Misty February
Hi All
A warm welcome to brothers Ian and Chris who have bought the final share in Surrey Charm – just a little bit left in Surrey Belle so time to go shopping again!
What a great end to the first week of February with Surrey Mist providing the first win for Surrey Racing at Lingfield (the 20th winning racecourse), George Baker’s first Surrey win, Trevor Whelan’s as well! Mist had only run once as a 2 year old where he came 6th in a pretty decent maiden at Sandown back in July. He showed some ability that day but it was really clear that he needed time to grow and mature as he looked very weak and leggy. A twisted testicle didn’t help either ! He still looks like he will grow more but he’s a pretty good looking big grey and we were pretty confident that in his second ever run he’d put in a good performance. It was never in doubt despite ‘falling around the tight final bend’ he really lengthened away to win by nearly 4 lengths and cue celebrations track side and at home and yet another Racing Post Star of the Day with the words ‘Surrey Mist was an impressive winner, shaping as if there is plenty more to come from him’.
And it’s all about timing because the following day we had 35 horse racing owners at Robins Farm enjoying sausages and hot drinks to see Surrey Mist, Surrey Princess and Surrey Charm, with many of the syndicate owners, despite the cold, having that extra spring in their step! Surrey Mist was absolutely fine for his run and loving the attention! It’s hard to know what is next for Surrey Mist. He’s going to be better on a galloping turf track with some give in the ground but they don’t start in England until end of March and we feel that he’s in good shape to run sooner than that.
It was great to see so many syndicate owners yesterday and especially to meet some of the new ones who we haven’t met before. It’s fairly clear that everyone is up for some fun and we’ll going to all enjoy going racing together this year! Next up will be Surrey Princess who again looked pretty decent on the gallops. She is one of 20 entered into the 5.15 at Chelmsford on Friday, an Amateur Rider only race which is a class 6 handicap (0-55) over 10 furlongs with Simon Walker booked to ride. We’re not sure yet whether we will declare as we would prefer Lingfield on Saturday 19th so we will mull that over in the next day or so.
Surrey Charm looks a nice compact horse who seems to have a fantastic laid back attitude. She worked upsides yesterday without any issues. George said she does look one of his more forward two year olds and would hope she will debut late Spring but as always, we will be lead by Charm and only run her when we feel she is ready. We are never in a rush to get our horses on the track because if they don’t enjoy the first experience then it’s very difficult to get the horse back on track.
There’s not too much news on the other horses, we will catch up with Nicky Henderson this week, Hughie’s stable visit has been confirmed for March 5th when both horses there will be in training and the Newmarket duo continue their work up Warren Hill and Long Hill.
We are doing all we can to promote Surrey Racing so if anyone has the urge please feel free to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin where we are actively trying to grow the brand. The odd share or like is greatly appreciated!
Good Luck to the Surrey Princess owners whether this week or next – can we make it 2 from 2 in February!
