Another frustrating week after a disappointing run from Surrey Noir at Leicester, who finished 5th and led initially to head scratching as to why he was so one paced. Surrey Noir he was completely different in attitude to his previous run at Doncaster, this time he was very quiet, docile and easy to saddle, so we assumed that he had learnt and matured. After the race with James Doyle, it was hard to put a finger on why he hadn’t really picked up, he didn’t think it was the ground, but he seemed to suggest Noir wasn’t interested. He was scoped afterwards and it showed a lot of mucus deep in the trachea which certainly goes a long way to explaining the subdued nature. He’ll need antibiotics and some time off so Charlie suggested that it will be a good opportunity to have him gelded now as that will certainly sharpen his mind. He will be castrated tomorrow and then return to racing in 4-5 weeks time on softer ground or the all weather.
A chance to bounce back though on Tuesday as Surrey Belle is one of 6 declared in the 20.00 “Forever Puppy Fillies’ Handicap” (Class 5) for three years old and upwards rated 51-70 to be run over one mile, two furlongs at Ffos Las, with Richard Kingscote on board. Belle worked well at the back end of last week, a lot more relaxed, and with rain hopefully easing the ground, we go with hopes that she can put in a decent performance in what looks to be a fairly open race.
Surrey Charm was put through her paces this past week as well as she gets nearer her return. Understandably she was very tired but great to see her doing harder work and building up her fitness towards a run later this month.
Surrey Shadow is well but Tom think’s he has stretched him enough for now and gave him an easy week this week, and that will be the same again next week, before picking up his work again the week of the 10th.
Surrey Fortune returns to work tomorrow having had an enjoyable holiday relaxing in the sun! I think Surrey Lord will be back in the following week as Toby and Clare got married yesterday and are hopefully celebrating for a little longer!
The vet has taken another look at Surrey Quest and confirmed that the steroid injections have reduced the inflammation in the neck joint and he can start being ridden. The initial view is that he is moving better but Quest didn’t have shoes on and so it is difficult to make a direct comparison to the last time he was examined. This coming week we’ll have more of an idea after schooling sessions.
No update on the other two year olds, Surrey Force and Surrey Fire, business as usual for them.
One of our owners, Guss, has been developing an Ai that looks at breeding and predicts performances of horses. He’s hoping to attract crowdfunding so if anyone is interested then feel free to look at his website and contact him for more info.
