Open Day Update

It was fantastic to see so many of you at Langshot Stud this morning – nearly 50 in attendance despite some pretty drab weather! For those who may have missed what was said and those who couldn’t make it here’s a bit of a recap,

Surrey Charm was a little excited with everyone there, Hughie said the last time she saw that many was at the racecourse and probably wanted to go racing again!  She’s very well, she’s grown to 15.1 hands and Hughie said noticeably better than where she was a year ago. The plan is for her to come into training with Hughie early January. It will take her 6 weeks to get used to the way of life there and then she’ll be pushed on for her reappearance. Hughie said that fillies do come back quicker than colts but time will tell, it could be March it could be June.

Surrey Force has grown since he came into Langshot 4 weeks ago and looks a really nice horse. Anthony Stroud couldn’t make it along but he sent his notes, “ I thought the Le Harve colt was a very attractive yearling and for a big horse he was a very good mover. He is from a very good farm and being French bred it gives you the opportunity to make the most of racing in France, I fully expected him to make 150,000 euros (at the sale) as he’s is a very athletic horse and an exciting prospect for next year

Kevin spoke about the breeding and the fact he just looks so well put together. He’ll be broken in at the stud, have a break over Christmas and join Kevin in the New Year. It takes a while for horses to get used to the madness that is Newmarket so he’ll have a few easy months before working towards make a debut late summer.

Surrey Fortune loves to pose! Being a 3 year old and a NH horse he’s bigger and more powerful looking than the others and seemed to know it! He’s got such a character and enjoyed his day out. No change in Billy’s plan with him – a Spring bumper, possibly 2 but maybe only the one, before being schooled for hurdles next NH season. He’ll be a 2 miler and looks pretty sharp so although he may jump a bigger fence later in his career hurdles will be his forte.

Surrey Fire travelled in from Hughie’s where he’s been for the past two week and another who took everything in his stride. Hughie mentioned his sire Masar’s win over 6f as an early two year old at Goodwood where he actually beat 6f specialist and Group winning Invincible Army on debut. That’s quite an achievement to then progress to win the Derby the following year and thinks he will be a very underrated sire. Hopefully some of that maturity will be passed to Fire and Hughie said it’s possible that Fire could debut early summer but it’s still very early days.

Of the other horses, Surrey Quest came out of his appearance at Uttoxeter well last weekend but certainly knew he’d been in a race. Nicky was very happy with his jumping and the way he battled throughout especially as he wasn’t 100% match fit he should come on a fair bit for the run. He’s probably not going to be a Grade 1 horse but he’ll certainly be competitive in decent Saturday races so we’ll hopefully plot a route throughout the season. Nicky thought that maybe quicker ground over further would be preferable so he’ll be looking for 3 mile races next, around the end of the year.

Gran Luna goes off to the sale on Wednesday as lot 2090, coming though the ring at 13.00 ish .. which you can view live on the Tattersalls website. Fingers crossed she makes more than the agents 10-12k prediction but whatever happens we hope she goes to a great home and turns into a wonderful broodmare.

Surrey Noir has been given the all clear to commence trotting this week which is great news. He’ll do that until around Christmas time before (if all is well) hitting the Newmarket gallops again. Charlie would certainly like to get him out on the all weather before the turf season starts at the end of March.

Surrey Lord is progressing nicely, he’s a lovely mover and took his first baby steps over obstacles on grass this week, learning to concentrate on the ‘fence’ and where to put his feet. Toby continues to be very enthusiastic about him!

Surrey Belle is slowly moving on but it’s odds against that she will run this year however there are some filly’s only races early in January over 10 furlongs at Kempton and one of those could be suitable starting point if she’s ready, Hughie will keep on slowly pushing and will let us know more mid December.

Surrey Knight and Surrey Mist are both taking things easy!

Good Luck to Gran Luna on Wednesday and the owners who are going to Newmarket to watch the sale.
