Royal Ascot Week
Unfortunately Surrey Mist has suffered a serious injury which rules him out of Royal Ascot. It was devastating for it to happen to Surrey Knight last week, and now we’re completely shell shocked that its happened to Mist who has suffered a suspensory ligament injury. Ligaments aren’t like tendons, it’s a different type of rehab which involves continued movement and weight bearing exercise like swimming. Fingers crossed for all involved with him.
Last week we had Surrey Belle running at Kempton. She did settle much better in the parade ring with the red hood on, but pulled way too hard for the first 7 furlongs of the race and then had nothing left at the end. Sean Levey managed to keep her on a tight hold although he had no chance from the draw to get alongside the rail. He thought the penny did drop later in the race and that hopefully she would have learnt for next time. His feedback was that she’s still backward, but has an engine that (like a typical Golden Horn) will be seen to best use on a galloping track, with pace in the race, on softer ground over a longer distance. It’s not anything we haven’t heard from Hughie, but Sean thought she would get better with every race and now that she will be off a lowly mark (low 60s ?) hopefully we can find conditions to suit and get her to win races. She’ll be back out again in about 4 weeks time.
We do hopefully have a runner this week, tomorrow in fact, with Surrey Noir who has been declared in Nottingham’s 18.25 race, a class 5 six furlong handicap with Danny Tudhope making his first appearance in Surrey Racing colours. However, we do need the ground to have some give, there has been some rain about today, but a final call will be made in the morning.
Surrey Charm still has the odd sniffle. Hughie thinks that she’s having a growth spurt which does lower the immune system. He suggested that horses that are pushed too hard at two struggle to grow due to stress and then start to develop in their later years. We are really keen to get her back racing but until she’s 100% ready we will have to continue to be very patient.
There’s not too much to update on the other horses although Surrey Force did do his fastest piece of work to date with his Golden Horn training partner last week. He takes it all in his stride and certainly on course for an August debut. The NH horses have another 2-3 weeks in the paddocks, although Surrey Quest will have a schooling session this week to find out if he’s moving freely following his steroid treatment.
Royal Ascot starts Tuesday so if you want to join the tipping competition, it’s only £20 and a lot of fun, message Nicky on hassle04@icloud.com to take part. There’s normally over a 100 people so it’s very competitive !!
Unfortunately, despite the rain arriving no runner at Ascot for us this year, the luck has to turn, maybe starting at Nottingham tomorrow, good luck to all those in Noir.
