RIP Lester

It was great to be able to put out details of our two new NH horses this week – Surrey Lord is already sold out – so we are starting a wait list for him in case those who have indicated they want a share don’t buy. It’s brilliant to be able to welcome some new owners as well, Paul K, Paul C, Josh, Tom, Luke and Harry – we look forward to catching up with you all at some point.

No racing for us last week but we did have a great day on Wednesday for the 3rd Surrey Racing Golf Day – 24 willing and able syndicate owners just about avoided the rain and it was warm enough for a refreshing drink on the terrace afterwards. Congrats to Will who just edged Richard by virtue of a better back 9, with third place going to Billy Ap who just edged Hugh using the same method. Gerry won the Longest Drive, Chris Nearest to the Pin, and the team award won by James H, Gerry, Billy and Clive. Toby took the wooden spoon and George was the best of the trainers.

George started us off saying that Surrey Charm had come out of her debut really well and he’s looking to get her racing again soon. I did suggest Newbury on the 21st and while he wasn’t against it I had the feeling he was thinking sooner. We’d rather not rush back for a second run, there’s plenty of time to mature and enjoy the season so we’ll discuss it with him soon. Surrey Mist is flying on the gallops, the offer we had has gone somewhat cold for now, so I think we can park that to one side and get ready for Royal Ascot. Surrey Princess unfortunately suffered a bleed in her last run so that’s being medicated for now. We are hoping she’ll have one more run before going to the July sales.

Toby spoke very highly about Surrey Lord – he really can’t believe we got him for such value and said what a fantastic mover he is. Sunday June 12th has been set to go and see him at 10.30. As I mentioned earlier, we are sold out and have a waiting list in case people change their mind before payments.

Billy was equally impressed with Surrey Fortune although said he’s a bit of a monkey! We love a horse with attitude ! We’ve set July 3rd as the date to go and see him and we do have shares left. He’ll probably be seen on the track earlier than Lord, he just looks that bit more racier. Both Billy and Toby came across really well and we’re delighted to have them training for us, although I hope Toby’s training is better than his golf !

Hughie escaped the wooden spoon this year and then won a Group 3 the next day – he was delighted with both outcomes! Surrey Gold, who was hiked 3 pounds to a career high 93 in the week, will run at Royal Ascot as long as the ground is soft, Hughie said he’s never looked better. He’ll have no qualms with him running in the Ascot Stakes over 2 miles 4 furlongs on the Tuesday if he doesn’t get in the Copper Horse. A settled stayer pretty much can take on all distances so we are very excited about that and praying for rain. Surrey Princess is coming along nicely and no reason why she won’t debut in October.

Surrey Knight has now been gelded and is doing plenty of walking which he will continue with for another 3 weeks before joining the rehab yard in Banbury. Surrey Noir is back working on Warren Hill and slowly getting there. He’ll step up his work in June but he’s probably not going to be as early as we would have liked, but you can’t push the youngsters too hard. Charlie is hoping he can debut late August so that probably rules out the Irish entry in early August.

No news on Gran Luna or Surrey Quest who are on holiday.

Have a super week ahead and enjoy the Derby on Saturday - one day we’ll be there.
