Weekly Update - 3rd Oct
It was great for the syndicate owners to see Surrey Princess back on the track - It has obviously been frustrating that the injury has meant she has only run twice this season but she is showing some promise. Being drawn in Gate 12 was always going to be difficult, particularly as the intention was to ride her forward. Trevor Whelan was pleased with the way she broke but did need to push her quite hard to get to the front and on to the fence. He was really happy with the way she traveled but felt her getting tired at the bottom of the hill 2 furlongs out. After that he quite rightly didn’t see any point in pushing her and she was blowing very hard after the race.
She will get a handicap mark on Tuesday and as she has come out of the race well so we will be looking to run again in about 2-3 weeks time, with potential races at Brighton on the 14th or Bath on the 18th. We will have a much better idea of her potential after the next race when George has said he will have her spot on. Now that we have got her fit again I think it is likely that we will continue to run her until Christmas on a mix of turf and all weather.
Surrey Mist on the other hand has finished for the year when we all decided it would be best for the horse to have him gelded and let him enjoy a winter break growing and filling out ready for what we hope will be an exciting three year old campaign. We were in two minds as we don’t really like rushing to geld horses although the vast proportion of racehorses are gelded, but as it transpires Surrey Mist had a twisted and partially undescended testicle which he would have felt and surgery was therefore a necessity.
Another week, another runner – Surrey Gold did have three entries this week with Leicester on Tuesday a fall back option but we will pass that over as Hughie thinks we should take on the tougher, better races on Friday at York and Newmarket, which we are more than happy with. Looking at the forecast, and with style of courses, we feel York would be the better option and Hughie doesn’t think the extra distance will be an issue.
No new news from Charlie with Surrey Knight – he’s going to be pushed harder over the next week or so to see whether he’s up to racing so watch this space!
Surrey Quest and Gran Luna are well and both nearly ready to go although the drying ground won’t help Quest.
We went to see Surrey Belle and Surrey Charm this morning at Langshot Stud, they are both looking really well. Surrey Belle, bought at the same sale as today’s Arc winner, will go into training with Hughie and looks a project in the making, she’s a typical German bred horse, a big strapping stayer of a filly. Surrey Charm is more compact and could come to fruition a tad earlier ie more of a speedier type. She will be trained in Surrey. Shares are already being sold so get in touch if you are interested in joining and being a racehorse owner!
Good luck to Surrey Gold and the racehorse owners this week – it’s great to be competing in these big handicaps and we’re sure there’s one there for Gold to win.
