10th July Update

Not the best week at Surrey Racing HQ or for the syndicate owners.

Surrey Charm hated the track at Epsom, losing a shoe wouldn’t have helped, but she was never really in the race. She’s going to need time to strengthen so she will have another run in about 3-4 weeks time to get a handicap mark and then she’ll have an break until she tells us she’s ready to go again. Given time, she’ll come back off a competitive mark and will certainly win races, probably further than a mile. She has come out of the race fine so that’s good and you can see on the picture below she has already grown at the back again and now needs the topside to even out.

Surrey Mist was disappointing at Ascot on Friday in a slowly run race he just didn’t have the turn of foot to make it into the winners enclosure. We think he needs a bigger field for 10 furlong races or a smaller field for 12 furlong races, and would prefer some cut in the ground. To win these competitive handicaps everything needs to be in his favour (as we say the stars need to be aligned) and it really is fine margins between winning and losing so we need to look at bit closer at race planning. Glorious Goodwood on Friday 29th July looks an ideal next race.

Surrey Princess went to the sales on Friday and fetched 12 000 guineas which again was slightly disappointing. She was sold to an agent who works on behalf of an Argentinian breeder so she’ll be well looked after and hopefully will produce some winners in South America.

We spoke to Nicky this week, Surrey Quest is doing fine but Gran Luna is still being kept in the paddock at Seven Barrows where Nicky can keep an eye on her. He said she would probably be turned out last this month but won’t be rushed back and he didn’t think she would race much before year end.

Surrey Noir is well and really pleasing Charlie, however, the owners are going to have to be more patient with him as he is growing faster than his maturity and he work load is fairly light to give him time to mature. Surrey Fortune is back out into a small pen while he gets over his operation – and next week he’ll be turned out into the fields to have a long holiday.

Surrey Gold is now back doing light canters and Hughie is aiming for a gradual rebuild and appearing on the racetrack in September.

No new news on Surrey Lord, Surrey Belle and Surrey Knight.
