Welcome to July

Just the one runner last week, with Surrey Princess making her final appearance in Surrey Racing colours. There was a good turnout for an enjoyable afternoon at Brighton but unfortunately Princess was not able to deliver one final win. She looked absolutely fabulous in the parade ring, winning best turned out, and was perfectly positioned to win the race but, for whatever reason, she just didn’t pick up. Trevor’s initial view was that she didn’t handle the course and kept changing her feet coming down the hill. She is absolutely fine now although she was clearly not happy racing and so she’ll go to the sales on Friday (lot 834 – approx. In the ring at 20.30 – which you can watch live via the Tattersalls website). Obviously, things haven’t worked out as hoped with Princess, although she does have a win and two places against her name from 11 runs but hopefully she’ll go to a good home and be a fantastic broodmare.

We also popped along to see Surrey Charm have a workout at Kempton last Thursday. She was super chilled in a ‘race’ with 5 colts and that attitude will stand her in good stead but right now she doesn’t seem to have come on much for her race at Goodwood and still looks weak behind. That will change over time but we may have to be a little patient this season. We’ll give her two more runs and then she’ll get a handicap mark and we can make further plans from there. She will be declared for the 6.23 race at Epsom on Thursday evening, a class 4 maiden fillies race over 7 furlongs with Trevor Whelan riding.

Also this week we have Surrey Mist running, either at Ascot at 16.36 on Friday in a class 3 handicap over 10 furlongs or Newmarket at 17.00 on Saturday in a class 3 handicap over 12 furlongs again with Trevor riding. It would appear that Mist has come on for his last run and is in great shape so we’re confident of a very good run wherever we go.

Of the others, Surrey Noir continues to do plenty of cantering and looks fantastic. However, he’s still not ready to do any more than he is right now. Charlie thinks he still has a bit of filling out to do but said he is wonderfully straight forward and a pleasure to train.

Surrey Belle has come on a fair bit in the last two weeks although still a work in progress. She has a long stride and takes everything with apparent ease apart from feeding time in her stall – she doesn’t like to be disturbed!

All of the other horses are as they were.

Good luck to the Mist and Charm syndicate owners this week – it would be nice to get in the winners enclosure this week!
