Weekly Update - 27th Jun
No runners under rules at a racecourse this week but we did have the pleasure of seeing Surrey Pride having a proper work out at Newbury on Wednesday. These little extras are what being an owner is all about, having the whole of the racecourse to ourselves, watching the prep from start to finish was great, the sun was out, it really was a fantastic morning. Surrey Pride, with Rhys Clutterbuck riding, as you can see from the picture looks absolutely fantastic although he did struggle a little for lack of fitness, but this is what the racecourse gallops are for ! Joe will now have to work him 7 days a week to get him fully fit and peaking for York. Looking further ahead we have made a entry into the Chesterfield Cup at Glorious Goodwood on Tuesday July 27th, an open handicap over 10 furlongs.
We do have a runner this week – Surrey Mist makes his debut either at Epsom’s evening meeting on Thursday or Sandown on Friday. Judging how Mist worked on his racecourse gallop he clearly still has a lot to learn but no better schooling than the real thing. Pat Cosgrave has been booked for either ride, he knows the horse well and is the perfect teacher (he’s also had 7 wins from his last 28 rides!). Slight preference is for Epsom where we are guaranteed a run.
Surrey Gold has his shoes back on now and will resume work this week. Haydock has come too soon for him but possibly Ascot could work on the 10th we’ll have to see how he works this week and obviously keep an eye on the weather forecast. You may have noticed his half brother Sheraz easily won a listed race in Paris this week.
Another who is back working is Surrey Knight after his 2 week slowdown, which as I mentioned last week can’t do a young strapping horse any harm. It can be hard on their shins as the work and grow.
Surrey Princess is well within herself but we are not taking any chances with her so she only starts on the walker this week which will be for about 3 weeks.
No news from the holidaying jumpers.
Good Luck to the Mist owners, always a very exciting time it witness your horse’s first race, knowing it can only get better!
