A Royal Update

Evening All, and a very warm welcome to new owner Paul, who thinks a share in the 2022 German Derby winner is too much to resist. Welcome Paul.

No runners this past week as Surrey Gold failed to get over his bruised foot, and actually the ground wouldn’t have suited him on Thursday (it would have on Friday!). Still a case of what could have been when we saw the Royal Ascot Tipster Board.

15 of us were there on course though for what was a thoroughly enjoyable day, no stress of having a runner, great company and really good fun. We think we’ve even managed to persuade Oli Bell to buy a share in Surrey Knight!

Surrey Gold is fine, he’ll have a small course of antibiotics and then back working again. It’s quite possible that he’ll be ready for Haydock on July 3rd which is a valuable handicap (prize pool £65k) over 1m 6f, Hughie didn’t think it was a problem to step up in distance but let’s see where we are at this time next week, plus the weather at Haydock is looking warm. Plenty of other options include Ascot and Chester on the 10th (across the card double anyone!)

Next event is Wednesday where Steve and I are visiting Joe and there’s a welcome to everyone to come and join us to see Surrey Pride being put through his paces. He’s in great shape and all roads still lead to the John Smiths Cup on what is being called racing’s ‘Super Saturday’. After the latest entry stage he’s 39th in the 77 entries for the 22 runner field.

Surrey Knight is suffering a little with the wear and tear of working and growing at the same time and has some soreness in the shins so Charlie is doing the sensible thing and just giving him 2 weeks on the walker. There’s really no point pushing a two year old who won’t make his debut until the Autumn, it will do him the world of good to have a couple of week’s lighter work.

Surrey Mist had a racecourse gallop at Kempton last Thursday which he enjoyed and came out of really well. He was raw, green and certainly more interested in the filly he was working with than actually running! Pat Cosgrave rode him and said he would have learnt from that but now his education needs to be on the racetrack so George will make entries for him to run in 7 furlong maiden/novice races in 9-12 days time.
