Firework Update !

It was great to see so many new faces at the Surrey Racing yearling parade today, the weather was great (for November), the horses were impeccably behaved – as were the syndicate owners!  It really feels like the new horse race owners will compliment those we have known for a few years, there’s going to be some fun times ahead. I’m sure everyone will agree what a great place Langshot Stud is and how good Karen and the staff were – we left them 8 bottles of champagne, hopefully they won’t all be opened this evening!

As for the three yearlings, they are all looking fantastic. Surrey Charm will be the first to leave the stud, she’ll move to George’s Robins Farm stables this week. She has developed the most of the three since she has been in and as such is ready to continue the next part of her education. Surrey Noir has actually only been in for 2 weeks so he’ll stay until the end of November before he joins Charlie’s Newmarket yard. He has yet to be broken in like the two fillies so Karen and her team will start lunge work with him next week. Surrey Belle will need more time than the others, she’s going to be a big strapping lass and will probably stay at the stud until February before joining Hughie’s Summerdown Stables. It was great that all of the trainers made it as well as Matt Coleman, the bloodstock agent who helped buy the horses, he seemed genuinely excited about what lies ahead for these three.

The others, Surrey Princess has recovered well from her last run at Kempton. We feel that she would appreciate the step up in distance so we will try her over 10 furlongs next time. I know some of the syndicate owners think a drop back in trip may help, we disagree with that, especially as there’s nothing in her breeding to suggest otherwise. There’s a race that will suit at Chelmsford’s evening meeting on Monday 22nd so we’ll pencil that in for now.

Unfortunately we don’t have too much news from our NH horses. We spoke to Nicky Henderson this week and rather frustratingly he said there hasn’t been enough rain to work Gran Luna and Surrey Quest on the grass gallops, and still maintains his stance that they will run 2 weeks after substantial rain. We obviously hoped they both would have been running by now but it’s tough to oppose a Champion Trainer despite some of the owners who live that way saying the ground is sodden.

Surrey Gold unfortunately still has a bruised heel and as such is still lame. We have already indicated he won’t run again this season so the priority now is to get his foot sorted over the next few weeks and get rid of the discomfort. The plan then would be for him to have a decent break and also he’s going to be gelded the week after next. Even if he a superstar he would never be a sire because of his confirmation as breeders only want their mares to mate with perfect sires. Colts, as they get older put on a lot of weight, and as we are to pick and choose ground conditions and manage gaps between races, there will be times when Gold will take a break. It’s a lot easier to bring him back without having put on too much weight so Hughie  to have him race ready in a shorter time.

No new news on Surrey Mist and Surrey Knight, both are well and having a little downtime, trotting away but not much else.
