Welcome to October

Last week was quiet but we are finally back racing this week with Surrey Mist, who has been declared to run in tomorrow’s Hippodrome Handicap at Windsor, the 15.12 race is a class 3 handicap for 3 year olds only to be run over 1m 3.5f. We have been drawn stall 10 of the 11 runner field and have a debut booking with Danny Muscat riding for Surrey Racing for the very first time. The ground won’t be as soft as we would have wanted but will be on the slow side of good so it will suit Mist better than the last couple of runs so we hope he can use this outing to get back on track.

He also has an entry at York on Friday but I think that’s more a saver in case Windsor doesn’t happen for whatever reason.

Surrey Noir had a screw inserted to his fracture this week to help the healing process. The operation was a success, he came out of the anaesthesia standing and seems pretty happy although he has been in Newmarket’s equine hospital all weekend but will come back to Charlie’s tomorrow. The screw should speed up the healing process and ensure there’s no lasting impact especially in keeping arthritis out of the foot.

We spoke with Nicky H this week – Gran Luna is well and has been entered into the Tattersalls December Mares sale which actually starts on November 28th.  Surrey Quest is almost ready to race. He did a hard piece of work last week and has been schooled over fences on Nicky’s ‘carpet’ gallop, however, Nicky is waiting for softer ground before working him on the grass gallops. As soon as it rains properly and the ground softens he will only need 7-10 days and then will be ready to race over fences. We are hoping to have a date to go and see both the week of October 24th so once confirmed will let you know.

Surrey Gold has settled in well in Cornwall. Jackie commented that he’s a really nice mannered horse and doesn’t think she’ll have any problems finding him a good home as he will make a lovely horse for a children’s riding school. He will now spend another 8 weeks alternating between his box and on the walker, after which he will then go out in a small paddock until late Spring when hopefully he’ll be ready to be retrained.

There’s not much to add about the other horses but we do have visits lined up so we’ll get more first hand news later in the month. The visit to Hughie’s on the 15th will probably be a 09.00 meet with Surrey Belle on the gallops at 9.30. The following week will be a visit to Billy’s to see Surrey Fortune at 09.00 and then we will aim to get to Culworth Grounds Farm to see Surrey Knight at 10.30. If you have yet to let us know if you wish to come then please reach out.

Tattersalls Book 1 sale starts Tuesday, with book 2,3 and 4 next week with 3000 yearlings catalogued for sale. We will be doing our best to buy the next dream but we are also concerned with the weakness of sterling which gives an advantage to overseas buyers where better prize money increases their spending powers.

Good Luck to Surrey Mist and connections – his first run for his new trainer at a course where we are 1 from 1 !
